This Top 5 Mountain Biking Destinations in the USA is based purely on my personal experience I have gained while traveling around the USA for the past 5 years riding the trails.

What is a Trails Destination?

This Top 5 is put together with the following in mind. If you had a weeks vacation, and would like to ride at least FIVE different trails in that week, all within a 20 mile radius, then in my books these are the best places to use as a base to get the best rides.

This list is NOT a list of Best Trails ( for the Top 15 Best USA Trails 2011 click here) and as I mentioned above it’s based on my personal opinion and based only on the places I have been.

TOP 5 MOUNTAIN BIKING DESTINATION’S IN THE USA

Henry W Coe State Park – Gilroy / Morgan Hill – CA

The Henry W Coe State Park offers miles and miles and miles of the sweetest fast flowing singletracks a mountain biker could ever wish for.

The trails are well maintained and marked, but definitely not over done, and a map is definitely needed. All the trails start in the valley, and no matter what trail combination you choose, you will spend the first couple of hours climbing, and I don’t care how fit you are, you will be walking your steed quite a bit on the way up. However, the trails are so fantastic, even the brutal climb puts a smile on your chops, Why?.. ‘cos you know the downhill is gonna be out of this world!, and worth every second of the strenuous climb.

These are rolling hills, so it’s definitely not just an up & down trail network, however even the rolling hills start up high.

Looping, lollipopin’, out & back, you name it, the world is your oyster on the Henry Coe, and you can easily spend days exploring these fantastic trails.

Trail Stats & Information

Nearby Town : Gilroy – Morgan Hill

Length: Your call, but remember a Coe mile is very strenuous

Trail Type: Loops, Lollipop, Out & Back.. you name it!

Skill Level: [My Opinion] Technically *challenging. Physically demanding – mental

*Note – I say technically moderate, ‘cos although there are no technical obstacles, the big problem is speed. The trails are very narrow, and extreme speeds are possible. Certain sections of trails are very bumpy, and 2 ft ruts appear out of nowhere.. and if you get caught out at high speeds, it ain’t gonna be beneficial to you!

The Pro’s :

fantastic singletracks

well marked trails

very scenic

trails are very low impact, chances are you will see nobody else.

Trail Head easy to get to

Free trail map at Hunting Hollow TH

The Cons :

It can get VERY hot – early start is recommended.

In the summer “stickers” are manic

LOTS of fluids needed on these trails

Moab – UT

I’m a huge Moab junkie, I love the Moab trails, and for 5 years running I have spent the month of October on the Moab Trails.

You could easily spend a couple of weeks here, and ride a different trail every day.

The Moab trails aren’t just fantastic, they are unique, and not just in the USA, but in the World.
A handful of my all time favorite trails are Moab Trails, Hidden Valley, Porcupine, Poison Spider, Gold Bar and Amasa Back and the world famous Slickrock Trail are just a few.

Riding on slickrock is a fantastic experience every mountain biker should at one point experience. Moab is without any doubt the Mountain Biking Capital of the World, and attracts more than 150,000 mountain bikers from around the world each year.

Trail Stats & Info

Town : Moab

Trails : some of the worlds best trails ( in my opinion) can be found in Moab. Some of my fav. trails are Hidden Valley onto Moab Rim, Porcupine Trail, Poison Spider down Gold Bar, Amasa Back – Rockstacker and the Flat Pass trail.

Pros :

Moab is a funtastic town, manic for MTB’ers

Trails are ALL unique

Trails are very scenic

Trails are technical

Huge choice of trails to choose from, from beginners to advanced, Moab can accommodate.

Good trail maps available at the bikeshops

Cons :

A lot of people that know me, will actually be quite surprised that I put Moab on the second place, ‘cos everyone that knows me, knows I’m a self confessed Moab Junkie. Although I love the Moab trails, there is also a lot about Moab that I don’t like. The main reason Moab is in second place, is probably the same reason I put Henry W Coe at the first place… CROWDS!
Moab trails (can) get VERY busy, I would never hit a Moab trail during a weekend, and in Moab I always get a very early start. I’m an un-sociable bastard, and although I don’t mind meeting fellow MTB’ers on the Trails, in Moab it can be bang out of order.

A lot of the Moab Trail Heads are pretty remote, and you definitely need a shuttle or drop off and pick up.

Expect to pay over the odds at the bike shops, I always try and “stock up” with parts before arriving in Moab.

South Lake Tahoe – CA

The South Lake Trails are in three words FAN TAS TIC !

Probably my all time favorite trail is in South Lake Tahoe the Cold Creek – Star Lake – Armstrong Pass – Corral Trail is the “Viagra” of MTB Trails, if this doesn’t do it for you, then nothing will.

The thing I personally like about the Tahoe trails, is you have to earn your reward, the saying “No pain no gain” definitely goes for these trails.

The trails are brutal, technical, scenic and damn right fun.

The majority of the Tahoe trails are fairly technical, and physically demanding with a lot of climbing.

Trail Stats & Info

Town : South Lake Tahoe

Trails : If like me you like pretty technical and demanding trails, then Tahoe is definitely for you. The section from Freel Pass all the down Armstrong and Corral is probably the best ride you will and can ever experience. 100% pure mayhem and adrenalin pumpin’ fun on a mtb.

Pros :

Fantastic technical Trails

Many of the better trails ( in my opinion) can be looped

Trails are very scenic

Good trail maps available at the bike shops

Cons :

South Lake Tahoe has a very short mtb season

The timing of these trails is pretty essential for a great riding experience – weekends can be manic on the trails.

Sedona AZ

Sedona offers some fantastic and unique trails, for all levels of experience.

The scenery Sedona has to offer, is fantastic, and Sedona is perfect for mountain bikers.

There is a large choice of trails in Sedona, suited for all levels of experience.

Some of my favorite Sedona trails are – the Highline Trail, Munds Wagon down Schnebly Hill and the Slim Shady- Llama -broken arrow loop.

All the above trails I mention are pretty technical and very demanding. If you prefer to takes things a lot easier on the trails, no problem, there are a lot of easy trails to choose from.

You don’t have to travel far to reach the trails

A lot of the trails can be done from downtown Sedona

Cons :

Trails can be very busy and over run by hikers and tourists

Helicopters and (pink) jeeps can ruin the experience on certain trails.

some of the better trails are not marked, and can be very confusing

Bozeman offers some fantastic trails in the Hyalite Peaks area. These trails are scenic, and some of the trails are very strenuous and very technical, the The Hyalite to South Cottonwood Trail is a prime example of this.
Another fantastic MUST DO trail in Bozeman is the 28 mile beauty “Bangtail Divide” a trail that should be on every mountain bikers list.

I am really happy I found this product, and would like to share it with the MTB community. I myself am lucky, I do not have think twice about what I take with me to eat or drink when I shred the trails, and yes, like most riders I take high energy drinks and Energy bars… and still, after a good few hours I feel drained.. so I can’t even imagine how difficult it must be for a diabetic.

How many of you know someone with Diabetes?..

Here’s my story:

When I started riding at the age of 16 we formed a small ( just 5 of us) but extremely active group that would ride every weekend, and when we weren’t riding or tinkering on our steeds, we would be blazing trails. “Nuts” was five years older than us, and by far the most passionate mtb’er I have ever known… That came to a slow but abrupt end when he was diagnosed as a Diabetic. He did not change as a person, he did not lose his passion for riding, but things did change for Nuts. We would hit the trails for a 6-7 hour epic, and we would be almost in tears, and Nuts would say ” C’mon, lets do Satan’s Fury ( a 2 hour slog) before we call it a day” That all changed after he became a diabetic.. 7 hours … 5 hours… 3 hours… to the point that anything more than an hour and he was drained.

In those days there was no Red Bull or Black Booster, we made our own Energy drinks, and EVERYONE had a secret formula, but the only difference was the amount of sugar and caffeine you added.

I still see Nuts from time to time, and I can tell you that he never stopped riding, he just shortened his trails.. a couple of weeks ago we did a 3.5 hour brutal ride ride together, and I noticed he was adding a powder to his drink, so I asked him about it, and he told me about this Energy Drink for Diabetics.. My first thought was “FINALLY” ‘cos I often thought to myself ” why doesn’t someone launch an energy drink for people that cannot use sugar or caffeine” ?!

So there you have my story, I’m sure everyone has a similar story to tell. I can tell you Nuts loves the product, and if Nuts loves it… I love it..

Like myself, you might be lucky that you can eat and drink whatever you choose on the trails, but if you know someone that has diabetes, do them a favor and tell them about Energetic Diabetic

Note

I am in no way at all affiliated with this product, and there are no benefits or financial gain in recommending this product

Their Story :

People With Diabetes Must Beat The Challenge Of Fatigue

Whether you are biking up a mountain or simply trying to get through your day, if you have diabetes fatigue can be your constant nemesis. People with diabetes can burn through their B-vitamins at a rate 16 times faster than people who do not have the disease, and this makes fatigue a real and ever present challenge.

There are several ways to help build energy and stamina when you have diabetes. First, get regular, moderate exercise. Exercise can energize a person and help them feel more active and alert.

It is also important to get plenty of sleep. Making a schedule to get plenty of sleep, going to bed at the same time, and waking up at the same time can help train a body to “know” when its time to feel tired.

Diet is critical. Eat the right things on schedule. By eating the right things regularly it is easier to keep blood sugar levels as stable as possible and avoid energy crashes.

Relax! By practicing relaxation techniques including positive visualization, meditation, or deep breathing a person may help lower stress and help keep blood pressure at a safer level.

If you have diabetes, it is essential to watch your weight. Excess weight can make it harder to control blood sugar levels and could increase insulin resistance. Maintaining a healthy weight may help reduce insulin resistance and make it easier to remain at target blood sugar levels.

Finally, avoid unhealthy energy boosters. Most energy drinks, caffeine, and sugar may provide a temporary “lift” but the lift is often followed by a crash and deeper fatigue than before. They are not designed for people with diabetes, and the results can cause more difficulties than the intended benefits.

The only energy formula designed for people with diabetes is drsi ReStore! Energy. It can be a good energy option if you are diabetic whether you are competing in a sport or just getting through the day. The formula contains an all natural Mega B vitamin formula that helps restore long-lasting, balanced energy and hydration with no spikes and no crashes. There is no sugar, no caffeine, no calories, and low carbs. It was developed for people with diabetes, but it can work for anyone especially if you want to stay away from sugar, caffeine, and stimulants.

drsi ReStore! Energy is becoming available in retail outlets across the country, and can also be ordered directly from the website: www.EnergeticDiabetic.com. For people with diabetes who want to stay active and compete this could be an important option to help restore energy and maintain stamina.

On this 2009 Tour, I took my bike / visited 17 bike shops, out of those 17 only 4 passed my very basic test to qualify for a recommendation article on mountainbikemayhem.com, that is quite shocking, because I was really expecting more than 90% to pass with flying colors.
Other than the obvious being polite and helpful, I looked for honesty and good judgement.
Every shop I went to, I asked them to check my back brakes, I said that I thought they needed replacing. However I knew that the brakes were worn but I also knew that there was still about 100 miles left on them, and did not need replacing… Only 4 shops told me the brakes did not need replacing (yet).

Now I know that, because a shop didn’t advise me against changing my brakes, that the shop is no good.. But let me make it VERY CLEAR, I have NEVER written or said anything bad against ANY shop.. that was and is not what I was looking for. What I was looking for, were the shops that I would recommend to my friends, and that I will definitely use again myself if in the area.

The Shops recommended on the 2009 Mountain Bike Mayhem Tour were:

The Hub Brevard North Carolina : www.hubbicycles.com
Smoky Mountain Bicycles Franklin North Carolina : www.smokymtnbikes.com
Redstone Cyclery Lyons Colorado : www.redstonecyclery.com
Single Tracks Fruita Colorado : www.single-tracks.com

All the above shops come highly recommended, and they deserve your custom.

So which shop can officially call it self the ” Best of the Best” ?

First of all, let me tell you WHY I chose this particular Shop.

The owner is very active and helpful on Mountain Bike Forums, he is an avid and active Mountain Biker, and not just locally. He spends a lot of his free time planning, maintaining and working hard on the local trail system. He is the owner of the shop and personally stands behind his products and services. His Shop is small, but has a huge reputation among a lot of hardcore mountain bikers
And most importantly, he is friendly, honest and knows everything there is to know about Mountain Biking and the history that goes with it.
I was hard pressed to find anything bad about the owner or the shop,.. BUT I did find one thing, that I will not forget in a hurry….. HE was the one that recommended ” Sourdough “!!!!!

So, Mountain Bike Mayhem’s BEST MOUNTAIN BIKING SHOP IN THE USA 2009 goes to

Walk into Single Tracks in the heart of Fruita, and you will immediately notice how well stocked the shop is, not just with some really niffty looking bikes, but a huge selection of everything you will need and more. Single Tracks is the kind of shop, that once you are in there, you just don’t want to leave.

Usually I ask for peoples recommendations about bike shops on various Mtb forums, but I had not got around to doing this for Fruita. In this case, I approached actuall riders on the Trails, and it is without doubt that the local mountain bikers choice of Fruita bike shop is ” Single Tracks Bike Shop ”

As luck had it, I needed a new back tire, and was curious to see why everyone I spoke to, had such good things to say about this shop.

Once in the shop, I was approached by Chris, the owner, and what a great guy he is. Straight away you feel his enthusiasm, he’s not running a shop purely to make a living, it’s clear he’s running the shop, ‘cos it’s what he loves doing.
I was only in the shop for a few minutes, but in that time Chris advised me about what to, and what not to ride in Fruita and Grand Junction.

Chris is not just the owner of a great shop, and a mountain biker himself, Chris is also the author of a fantastic and highly recommended Book called ” Grand Junction Trails and Camping Guide” that is full of useful trail info.

Take my word for it, if you are in the Fruita area, and you need anything for your rides, just head for ‘Single Tracks’ and I can guarantee that you too will be recommending the shop to others.

Single Tracks Bike Shop is located in the heart of downtown Fruita, Colorado.
From Exit 19 off of I-70, head north to the stop sign, take a right onto Aspen Street, which leads you to Park Square.

The most important thing when running a small personal business, is having a good reputation, it is this that will keep a small business healthy. Anyone can sell products, even good products but that alone does nothing for a reputation, a reputation is based on how happy and satisfied your customers are with your services, the happier and more satisfied the customers are, the better the reputation. In real life it takes years to gain an excellent reputation, and a lot of hard word to keep it.
When it comes to having an excellent reputation, Redstone Cycles is right at the top. That in itself is an achievement, but having an excellent reputation as a bike shop in Colorado is even a bigger achievement. Mountain Biking in Colorado is huge, with some of the best trails not just in the USA, but in the world. Having a reputation as “the best” bike shop around ( and by around, I am not talking 5 miles, I’m talking 100′s of miles) then you must be damned good!!

Dave and his wife have worked very hard in getting not just the shop to where it is now, but also the local trail system to what it is now, and it is thanks to people like Dave that spend hours and hours of free time working on the trails, so we can all enjoy them.

I met Dave the owner of Redstone Cycles in his shop, and even though he was very busy, he took the time to help and advise me about, not just the Boulder Region Trails, but also about other Trail systems in Colorado.
Dave’s knowledge of Mountain Biking in this area goes far beyond just knowing what trails to ride, he can tell you the history of the trails, the Geology of the trails and lots more interesting facts about Trail systems throughout the country.

It’s true, that Colorado mountain bikers or cyclists have a huge choice of shops to choose from, but just ask any local mountain biker where you should take your bike, and chances are you will end up at Redstone Cycles,’cos at the end of the day, there can only be one “Best”

Redstone’s Story:

I guess it all started when my wife and I moved to Lyons when I was working for Schwinn in 2000. Lyons is an amazing town on the front range of Colorado. It’s small but has a huge quality of life, especially for a cyclist. We are surrounded by great riding, both mountain and road. I was racing semi pro mountain bike at the time. Living in town and spending a lot of time pedaling the area and it wasn’t long before I had completely fallen in love with Lyons. Lyons was a great place to live and to ride. About that time, Schwinn went bankrupt a second time and I landed another job a bit further away at Pearl Izumi. It was great being in the bike industry, and PI has been an amazing company to work for but when my oldest daughter was born in 2003 I took a long hard look at life and re-evaulated my priorities. I was spending too much time in the car and away from my family.

I started Redstone Cyclery in late 2003 as a home business. Outside of my family, there is nothing in the world that means more to me than cycling. Redstone started as a way to follow my passions, my dreams, and support myself at the same time. I was tuning up local bikes and strictly doing labor jobs. Word of mouth spread and it quickly became more than a side business to make money. I opened the shop (the world’s smallest bike shop) on the corner of 4th and Broadway in downtown Lyons in November of 2004. Having a family and a mortgage, though, meant that I still was working at PI a full time schedule. The shop opened officially on weekends and by appointment. Over the course of the next few years, business flourished and the shop grew quickly. Some days were hard, working all day at PI, then working until 2am at the shop, but the reward of a job well done is intoxicating.

With the support of both my family and Pearl Izumi, I took the PI job from full time to part time early in the summer of 2004. The bike shop has continued to flourish and is doing better than ever. “Local” customers stop in from Laramie, WY all the way to Colorado Springs. We’ve been working diligently over the past years to spread the love of bike culture and it’s working. We have new trails being built, attitudes changing, and more cyclists everyday. Word has spread about the worlds smallest bike shop and our customers and supporters are all over the country. Redstone is now a world wide top 20 Turner dealer and a top 30 Intense dealer. It’s come a long way.

Services

Service is at the root of what Redstone does best. Whether you want to fix up your townie or build a custom mountain bike from the ground up, it all starts with service.

They opened their doors just a few years ago but, already, they have earned a reputation for outstanding service – both customer service and bicycle service. It is a reputation that they have worked very hard to build, and one they are very proud of. Years of personal experience of racing, riding, wrenching and working in the bicycle business has put Redstone at the top. Their customers are consistently pleased with their bicycles after they have had the Redstone touch.

Redstone’s service does not discriminate, whether it’s a custom Turner mountain bike, tricked out Dean ti/carbon road bike, or beat up townie, they always give 100% so your machine can be dialed in perfectly. At Redstone, they are diligent, patient, and confident.

Since bicycles involve detailed and personalized fine tuning, our service always includes follow up. A bike is not done right until it is done right for YOU. Because of our reputation, our service, and our follow through, our clients come from as far away as Fort Collins and Denver.

Next time your bicycle needs a little love, bring it in to Redstone. It will thank you for it.

The first time I entered “Smoky Mountain Bicycles” I was very impressed, but this time around, I was not there for my bike, or parts, I was there for some trail info. I was advised by the “Great Smoky Mountains Visitors Center” to pay Smoky Mountains Bicycles a visit to get all my questions answered about Trails in the Franklin area.
On my travels, I have before, been sent to the local bike shop for info and maps, just to get a big zero on info. Luckily for me,this was not the case at Smoky Mountain Bicycles.
The big difference about this bike shop, is the owners, Pam & Dave, they don’t just manage and work the shop, of course they are very enthusiastic cyclists themselves, but best bit is, they work hard for others on improving the trail system in the Franklin region, and even going out with the GPS and marking their own trails, to share with others.

While Dave was working hard on a Mountain Bike, Pam was very helpful, advising me, and supplying me with (free) maps of local rides and explaining the hard work the Saba (Southern Appalachian Bicycle Association) was achieving in the area, and it is great to know that they are very active in this region. For more info about SABA, visit : www.sabacycling.com/

I left Smokey Mountain Bicycles knowing a lot more than I did when I arrived, and a handful of local trail maps..
I did not think I would need their services again.

Two days later I’m screaming around Tsali when on a small section of (slightly) downhill, I heard a horrible phsssssshhhh noise coming from my bike, my first thought was “Shit I’ve blew my rear sus’ shock” but luckily I had just punctured my tires, snake bite both front and rear!!
So I needed a shop to stock up on inner-tubes, one tire and a few other bits & bobs for the bike. Luckily for me, a stranger in town, I knew the exact shop and people to help me out.

Dave helped me out with all my bike needs,(3 tubes a tire and a saddle pouch, and took the time ( he was working on three bikes) to answer and explain my questions, mainly about “Tubeless tires”

All in all, I can and will recommend Smoky Mountain Bicycles in Franklin NC, the shop is very well stocked, and the owners Pam & Dave are very helpful, so anyone in the region ever needing a bicycle shop, being it for a wonderful new bike ( they have some fantastic bikes on the floor) or bicycle parts, or even just info about the local trails, then head straight to Smoky Mountain Bicycles in Franklin, they deserve your business, and you deserve the best.

In the second week of July 2009, I will have been testing the Giant Yukon FX for a whole year. 2008 was the Mountain Bike Madness 2008 Tour, we did the best trails in Colorado, Montana, Wyoming, Washington State, Oregon and Utah. We spent many… many hours on the trails. Then we spent another 4 months in the South of France, and since last week we started our 2009 Mountain Bike Mayhem Tour of the USA, which will take us through all the mainland States testing the best trails the USA has to offer over a 5-6 month period.

So far in the first year, the $900,- Giant Yukon has performed like any $4000 bike would perform, and apart from a handful of inner tubes and a tire or two, i have not had any issues with the bike.

However, whilst testing the trails in the DuPont State Forest, the Yukon FX started showing signs of some wear and tear, and I knew this time that some simple TLC was not going to be enough, I needed to have the bike serviced, and to top it off, I crunched my chain, I always carry a spare chain, but decided to walk the last mile, and have the bike serviced properly and have a new chain put on.

I know from experience that you have “Bike Shops” and you have “Bike Shops” and there is only one way for a stranger in town with a funny accent to find the best shop, and that is to ask the local Mountain Bikers on the trails where they would take their own bikes.

Now there are one or two excellent bike shops in the Brevard area, but the name that kept coming back to me, was “The Hub” , so with a bit of help from my very good friend Google, I soon knew all I needed to know about the “North Carolina’s Mountain Bikers Choice” of bike shops… The Hub

What I liked about what I read online was the fact that everyone working at the store were young, and really into mountain biking themselves, and the fact that the shop seemed to be well stocked. This was obviously not Uncle Herbert trying to get rid of a few bikes to the fella with a funny hat and a twitch!! ( believe me there are plenty of them around … Uncle Herberts I mean)

So from my campsite somewhere in the North Carolina boonies, I loaded my bike into my pickup, programmed my very loyal GPS to the address on their website, and off we went. After 20 min. my GPS told me I had reached my destination on the right!!… Yes, I was parked in front of the emergency ward of the hospital!!… What the @$%#!!.. I double checked my GPS, and it was the exact same address as on their website. So I called the The Hub, and had to be guided to the end destination, just 3 miles ahead.

THE HUB.

First Impression from outside : Thankfully there is lots of parking in front of the shop, there were a few other people with Mountain Bikes in their trucks which is a good sign, and there were some nifty looking bikes parked outside the shop,.. all in all a great first impression.

First Impression from the Inside : A small open plan shop / workshop, seemed to be very well stocked but not too crowded. Very friendly people in the shop, and some very nice looking bikes. A Good Impression

Impression of the person that helped me : I was helped by Jon, a very friendly and young fella, who took the time to listen to my rantings and explained the procedure of servicing my bike. Jon knew what he was talking about, so that was good enough for me.

Any sales pressure? None at all, I even suggested spending more on a better chain, but was told that unless I am trying to shed weight, the cheaper one is just as good. I also asked about a few maps, and he went through them with me, and even suggested that I could get a FREE ( but crap) one at the Ranger Station. I also bought a new helmet, a $27 one, no pressure at all to spend more on a better one.. Absolutely no sales pressure at all.

Happy with the service?: So far Yes, after looking over my bike, and renewing my chain, and tightening the brakes, there were still issues with shifting gears smoothly, after a closer inspection it was pointed out to me that my chain rings were worn, and it would probably be easier and no more expensive to order a new Crankset ( $50) and that numerous teeth on my cogs were damaged, they will be replaced ($17)

Conclusion: After more than 80 miles of taking a beating on some of the Pisgah’s most notorious trails, the Yukon is still going strong, the issues I had before, have all been fixed, and the new crankset, cogs and chain have all lived up to expectation.

I can, and will highly recommend the Hub to everyone and anyone needing a bike shop in the Brevard area.
